This lesson examines immigration and assimilation. Many immigrant parents experience the fear of not appearing “mainstream” and in some cases bow to societal pressures to raise their children without their ethno-cultural heritage. In this film, two girls, one of Ukrainian background and the other presumably English, persist in their cultural exchange of dance in private, when they are denied the public demonstration of Ukrainian dance. Students consider how assimilation pressures in 20th century Canada try to mainstream immigrants. The extension activities examine the history of Ukrainian immigration to Canada.
