In 1956 the Hungarian Revolution claimed 50 000 lives. Many thousands more had to flee their homeland to escape the treachery of the secret police. Clara and her father are two of these refugees, who came to Canada to settle. But both are haunted by the horrible events they have left behind. It takes the arrival of Uncle Janos from Budapest to explain to Clara the years of uncertainty and bitterness she has lived through since her childhood escape.
