The oceans are critical to the social and economic well-being of Canada and particularly important to coastal, rural and Aboriginal communities. Oceans are a finite resource, yet the scale and diversity of ocean-related activities are growing dramatically, creating ecosystem imbalances and degradation of the marine environment.
