One hundred years of steel and coke production left more than a million tonnes of contaminated soil and sediment in Sydney, Nova Scotia. In 2004, Canada and Nova Scotia signed a $400-million agreement to cleanup the "Sydney Tar Ponds" over a 10-year period.
