The environment, a fruitful idea: a common stock, branches and complex ties

To sum up, the term ‘environment’ embraces all aspects of the world in which we live, to which we are tied. The list of classes offered in any college or university demonstrates the extent to which the notion of the environment has penetrated almost every branch of learning. It covers a complex world of interconnections. We would be wise to be wary of any model that seeks to combine all of these, even the most widely accepted models. Our presence on this earth, and our individual and collective lives in relation to it, are much too marvellous to be easily summed up. A walk in the woods reminds us of this.
