Jan Lavies, postcard, Netherlands, 1945

With symbolism and humour, the artist Jan Lavies depicted the liberation of the Netherlands by Canadian and Polish forces. When German troops in the province of Holland surrendered on May 5, 1945, the Canadians liberated the west of the country, including Rotterdam, The Hague and Amsterdam.
